How this page makes money: some links on this page are affiliate links. If you buy a policy through them, Yourprimecar may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Yourprimecar is not an insurer or an insurance broker and does not give insurance advice. Quotes, cover and prices come from our comparison partner and the insurers. Always read the policy documents before you buy.

How it works
- Click through to our comparison partner.
- Enter your details about you, your car and your driving history.
- Compare prices and cover, then buy directly from the insurer you choose. Or don’t: there’s no obligation.
Types of car insurance in the UK
- Third party only: the legal minimum. It covers injury to other people and damage to their property, but not damage to your own car.
- Third party, fire and theft: third party cover, plus cover if your car is stolen or damaged by fire.
- Comprehensive: also covers damage to your own car, even if an accident was your fault.
Comprehensive cover isn’t always the most expensive option, so it’s worth comparing all three.
What affects the price of your car insurance
- Your car: every model sits in an insurance group from 1 to 50. Lower groups usually cost less to insure.
- Where you live and park: your postcode, and whether the car is kept on a driveway, in a garage or on the street.
- Age and experience: newer and younger drivers usually pay more.
- Claims and convictions: recent claims and motoring convictions raise prices.
- No claims discount: each claim-free year can lower your premium.
- Mileage and use: how far you drive, and whether it’s for social use, commuting or business.
- Your excess: the amount you pay towards any claim.
- Your job: insurers price different occupations differently.
Ways to bring your premium down
These are general tips, not advice about which policy is right for you.
- Compare at every renewal. Since 2022, insurers can’t charge you more to renew than they would a new customer for the same policy through the same channel, but another insurer may still be cheaper.
- Pay annually if you can. Paying monthly usually means borrowing the cost, with interest added.
- Think carefully about your voluntary excess. A higher excess can lower your premium, but you’ll pay more if you claim. Only choose an amount you could afford.
- Protect your no claims discount where it makes sense for you.
- Consider a black box (telematics) policy, which bases your price partly on how you drive. These are popular with younger drivers.
- Add an experienced named driver. Never list someone else as the main driver of a car you mainly drive. That’s called fronting, and it’s fraud.
- Choose a car in a lower insurance group when you buy your next car.
- Be accurate. Wrong details about your mileage, job or address can invalidate your policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free to compare quotes?
Yes. Using the comparison site is free. Yourprimecar may earn a commission if you buy, which doesn’t change the price you pay.
Will getting a quote affect my credit score?
Comparison sites usually run a soft search, which doesn’t affect your credit score. Check the comparison site’s own terms for details.
What information will I need?
Your car’s registration number, your driving licence details, how many years of no claims discount you have, details of any claims or motoring convictions, your address and your estimated annual mileage.
Is Yourprimecar an insurer or broker?
No. We don’t sell insurance or give advice. If you’re unsure what cover you need, speak to the insurer or an FCA-regulated broker. Complaints about a policy go to the insurer first, then to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
